Gray Bed

After a storm destroyed much of our garden five years ago, we have spent every summer since restoring a portion of it. With my husband so often abroad, we have a short window in which to get projects done. Now that the garden is in order, we have moved inside to tweak a few rooms. The first project on the list was to paint our pine bed and nightstands. My husband wanted to try chalk paint, which turned out to be a mistake. Just breathing on it made the paint chip. Three coats of paint, three coats of finish and three days later, however, we had a lovely gray bed. The only negative was that it was supposed to be taupe. We have a long history of not being able to match the paint swatch in the store with the color in our heads.

Still, I like my gray bed...

The natural, yellow pine was a warm look, but the gray feels peaceful to me. I like to lay in bed and think quiet thoughts. It is a lovely way to start and end the day.

  1. I love your new color! I wouldn't have known it was the same bed. Very tranquil. And that wood cabinet at the end of the bed is an amazing contrast to the gray.

    1. The purchase of the cabinet two years ago is what started us thinking we should change our bed. The orange tones of the pine didn't blend as well with it. It didn't seem prudent to buy a new bed and nightstands, so we went with the arduous task of painting. Thirty years ago, we were stripping everything we owned down to the wood. Perhaps, the person who buys our bed at the estate sale after we pass will be cursing us for painting a perfectly lovely pine bed.

  2. I love your new bed-color.(and the bedding)and I love the idea of complimentary colors rather than matching! Makes me want to try something with our almost 30 year old very chipped bedroom suite!

    1. I have a few one-word philosophies when it comes to my decorating. Quiet is one and Blend is another. Pinterest helped me this time around. The reason I like wood is because it doesn't chip. Let's see how long this painted suite lasts.

  3. It is a very restful colour and it has transformed the pine into something very contemporary - I only wish I could persuade my OH to paint our pine bedroom furniture which has seen better days.

    1. We used a paint sprayer which made the task easier. If we hadn't been experimenting with chalk paint it would have been even easier. Live and learn.

  4. You are totally on trend with this sophisticated hue! And restful it is...cool and simple. I have gray bedding and pale gray walls with an IKEA "Winter Waves" print with brushed nickel frame.
